I thought it would be nice to begin the blog with a post about the story of In Bloom! I have always loved reading. While growing up, my family read to me every day, and my room was filled with books. I have also always loved animals and conservation.
I carried these interests with me to college. My main studies were in literature, even taking a special study in Jane Austen. I complemented my major in English with classes in conservation. I hoped that I could somehow bring the two areas together in my career path.
Following graduation, I became a writer and editor for a family-owned newsgroup that focused on uplifting stories. I then joined an earth-science nonprofit organization, where I edited scholarly books. Finally, I edited a scholarly journal for another earth-science nonprofit. In both roles, I enjoyed helping authors from around the world.
Last spring, I was part of a layoff. I decided to view the situation as a chance to create my own little business. I found a cute notebook and began filling it with ideas. Most days, I could be found outside, pondering and writing away in the notebook.
I decided to finally bring together my two interests. The business would help authors from around the world with their pleasant novels for any age, along with wildlife conservation research. I felt like my experience would transfer well to both areas.
Next, I needed to choose a name for the business. One of my favorite things to do is grow cut flowers. Pondering a name took place in the summer months, while I was tending to my flowers. I kept returning to the idea that growing flowers is similar to editing in many ways. By tending to and caring for them, they grow and bloom. The same thing happens with words.
I filled pages in my notebook with name ideas, most relating to flowers. Sometimes, it is helpful for me to write my ponderings on pieces of paper and put them up somewhere. This time, I took advantage of a pretty day and put them in a small althea tree. That day, I landed on the name In Bloom Editing.
With a name, I was able to establish the business side of In Bloom. This took a lot of learning and guidance. By taking one step at a time, I was able to move along and get everything in place.
Then, I thought about the offerings. The pages in my notebook filled even more. Soon, the notes moved to pieces of paper in the front window of the house. I adjusted the offerings until I thought they were most helpful.
Most importantly, I spent a lot of time thinking about the author experience. I wanted In Bloom to be inclusive and welcoming. I wanted to celebrate, encourage, and uplift authors every step of the way. I wove this intention throughout every part of the business.
Earlier this year, I reached out to Haley Petre Design for branding and a website. She captured the heart of In Bloom in every detail of the design. It was a joy to have her help and learn from her in the process. She truly shaped so much of the business through her guidance and suggestions.
Lastly, I joined the Editorial Freelancers Association and enrolled in one of their courses to learn more about the nuances of editing novels. I plan to continue my education throughout this journey to learn and share knowledge with authors.
I am looking forward to all of the good things to come! It will be wonderful to get to know authors and help their writing bloom. Thank you for being here. I truly appreciate the support.
